I presented a paper at the Conference on Understanding the Holocaust, Genocide, and Mass Violence in the Public Imagination at the Metropolitan State University of Denver on September 22, 2022. The paper is titled "Why Didn't They Leave? Understanding the Challenges for Jews Fleeing Nazi Germany." Using examples from the Heppenheimer family, the paper discusses both the challenges in leaving Germany following the Nazi's rise to power in 1933 and the challenges in finding a place to emigrate.
Stolpersteine is a grassroots initiative to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust. The project places small engraved brass paving stones at the places where the victims lived. On October 12, 2021, stumbling stones were placed at the former home of Max and Recha Heppenheimer to remember them and their two sons Kurt (Curtis) and Alfred (Fred). Curtis was my father-in-law.
